The Stoutenburgs bid us "Adieu"
Posted: 05/21/05
On Friday June 17th 2005, at 8pm,The Astor Street Opry will be hosting an evening of Song, Tribute and Friendship as a farewell performance for Tony, Pam & Matt Stoutenburg as The Finnish Meat Market Theater 279 W. Marine Drive Uniontown District, Astoria.
For over 9 years, Pam & Tony Stoutenburg have been a very important part of our Northwest Performing Arts Community. Tony has been given a new calling to the Grace Lutheran Church in Hayward Wisconsin. Pam, his lovely wife, (who is graduating from Clatsop Community College with an Assoc degree and an RN certificate on June 10) will be joining him along with their son Matt in this new adventure.
The Stoutenburgs have been an intricate part of the development and growth of The Astor Street Opry Company. Pam has been actively involved with ASOC as President, Vice President and on stage. She first took to our stage in 2000 as Miss Macie in our summer melodrama Shanghaied and has since went on to perform in multiple shows and performances including: Dinner Theatre, Holiday Music Magic, Olio Nights, and multiply fundraising events. Tony ran the HOLIDAY MUSIC MAGIC SHOW for 4 years; bring it to a level that made it a cherished annual event, along with performing in SHANGHAIED as MC for the past three years. In addition they have both been very active in local Opera Events performing with The North Coast Choral and at other CCC events.
The Stoutenburgs breathed new life into ASOC just when it was need, they are our good friends and they will be sorely missed.
So, in tribute to their years of creative contribution to our area The Astor Street Opry Company is hosting a very special evening of song and friendship. Come hear their joyful singing one more time, as Pam & Tony, along with their son Matt, perform for us at our little theater on June 17th 8pm in Astoria. Also joining them on stage in song will be friends, Deac Guidi, LaMar Blackner, ChrisLynn Taylor, Roger Martin, Judith Niland, Skye McKey, Michael Wangen and Franko.
All are welcome! This is a no charge event, with a no-host bar & snacks available. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Dress is casual to formal, no reservations are needed call 325-6104 for more information.

Whats NEW for our 21st Season?
Posted: 05/21/05
What's new this year? How about our director...This year Del Corbett (our original director and co-creator of SHANGHAIED)decided a new director should try their hand. So we were lucky enough to get LAMAR BLACKNER a veteran Shanghaied performer (you might remeber him as "Sneake" or "Krooke" for the past five summers), to step up and take charge. Assisting him will be our gallant stage manager and experienced ASOC stage director Anne MacGregor.
As a twist we are giving a brand new chorographer a chance to she what she can do, Carletta Lewis-Allen (16 years old) has been performing in SHANGHAIED for over 4 years and is an experienced Maddox Dance Studio dancer for over 10. She is now chopping at the bit to see what she can do with our group dance numbers and the can-can and we are very pleased to have her on board.
In addition Del won't appandon us totally (even though he keeps claiming to be "retired" and wants to work on his boat in Hammond). He will still be around only this time as "Tech" director fixing and solving stage problems through out the summer.
Stay tuned for a cast announcement too!

SHANGHAIED AUDITIONS MAY 17-19TH
Posted: 05/04/05
Astoria
Auditions for our 21st season of the locally produced and performed Broadway-Style Musical Melodrama, SHANGHAIED IN ASTORIA, will be held Tuesday, May 17th (for our younger performers ages 13-17) Wednesday May 18th (18years old and up) & Thursday (for call backs only) May 20th 6:30pm at the Finnish Meat Market Theatre 279 W. Marine Dr Uniontown district Astoria.
SHANGHAIED Opens JULY 7TTH and runs through SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2005.
This fun rollicking, frankly absurd, frivolity is a great place to spend your summer and have fun learning the craft of melodrama performance. It is a composite of the English Music Hall, American Musical Theatre, American Vaudeville and Early American Cinematic Melodrama, requiring a precise form of staging, a definitive technique and style of performing, not effortless, but very straight forward and great creative fun as it evokes laughter, delight and wonder. SHANGHAIED first began in 1984 opening with a bare bones budget and a cast of talented friends, for three weeks in the summer of 1985, and has now entertained audiences for almost 20 years.
ALL PARTS ARE OPEN and can be split for the summer run, including: an heiress of a very successful fishing cannery, a nasty no-good villain, two bungling Finnish fishermen, 4 man-hungry sisters, a Norwegian hero and his mama of course! Along with a dozen other delightful collection of colorful characters our plot centers on the Shanghaiing of our hero and his rescue. All in a melodramatic style of course! Where you can CHEER for the hero, SIGH with the Heroine, and THROW POPCORN at the Villain!
ASOC is VERY pleased to welcome LAMAR BLACKENR, as director for the 2005 season. His extensive experience on stage and off will make this run one of the most rewarding activities you can experience this summer as he bring to our stage his own unique style and freshness.
Parts are available for over 50 different performers including: Actors, actresses, singers, dancers, musicians and tech staff. And since SHANGHAIED runs 10 weeks, actor share character roles performing each an average of 5 weekends.

The Astor Street Opry Company has set a goal to raise $6000 by June so that the 21st season of SHANGHAIED IN ASTORIA can open as planned in July 8th.
Although support in our community is strong and we appreciate all that has been done to help keep us going, the costs of maintaining our theatrical organization must be supplemented with other fundraising activities to keep the doors open at THE FINNISH MEAT MARKET. Currently we have two fundraising events planned Improv at the Meat Market on April 15th &16th, an evening of comedy, skit and fun AND a Rummage Sale at the Meat Market! April 29th, 30th & 31st, The money raised during these next upcoming weekends will go towards the basic necessities that sustain and supports ASOCs long running musical melodrama, SHANGHAIED IN ASTORIA. Last season we reached our 20th year with many landmark events and honors including from the Governor Ted Kulongoski, State Representative Betsy Johnson and Senator Joan Dukes, who all came to our stage to honor Shanghaied as a State Treasure. Please help us keep our unique piece of Astorias history and magical folklore alive by giving generously. Donations to the can be made by calling 325-6104. Keep support YOUR local community theatre and SHANGHAIED IN ASTORIA working.

3rd Annual Winter Dinner Theatre Presentation
I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES
A Neil Simon Comedy
SPONSORED BY
Bank of Astoria
Uniontown Fish Market Catering & Deli
The Astor Street Opry Company is pleased to announce its upcoming Winter Dinner Theatre Presentation of I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES By Neil Simon (Produced with special permission from Samuel French INC.) will open on February 11 and will run every Friday and Saturday evenings to March 6th 2005, with one Sunday dessert Matinee on Feb. 20th, at THE FINNISH MEAT MARKET 279 W. Marine Dr. Uniontown Astoria.
In our story, Herb, (played by Michael Wangen) a once successful Hollywood scriptwriter, is having a dry run and his confidence is shaken. He does have some consolation in his off and on relationship with Steffy (performed by Donna Wright) a movie makeup woman. Then suddenly he's confronted with his distant and almost forgotten past when his teenage daughter, Libby, (played by Cyndi Clifford) arrives from Brooklyn. Libbys goal is to have her Father get her into "pictures". But along the way she trys to salvage him and also find a bit of lost love. How they pick up the pieces of a father-daughter relationship is a poignant, tender and very funny story as they discover a great deal about each other and about themselves. "Terrific . . . sweet, dandy and touching. . . A mature, memorable play that brings joy to the winter season." N.Y. Post. "A finely tuned theatrical blend of hilarity, honesty, directly and deeply felt emotion. Go." WCBS TV2.
This NEIL SIMON COMEDY is sponsored by BANK OF ASTORIA and UNIONTOWN FISH MARKET CATERING & DELI directed by Anne McGregor. THE WORKERS BAR & GRILL will provide a fine dinner before the show. Dinner 7pm, Showtime 8pm, Sunday Dessert Matinee 2pm. Tickets including Dinner $22, Show Only $10, Dessert Matinee $12. Call 325-6104 for Reservations. For more info check out our website.

Shanghaied In Astoria continues its remarkable summer long celebration of Reunions and FUN with the return this Labor Day Weekend performances ONLY , of two of the most talented and dedicated Shanghaied Alumni from the last decade
Preston Meyer and Earl Coffman ...
Earl Coffman now residing in Portland Oregon, was an original cast member for the very first run of Shanghaied In Astoria in 1985 at the Astoria Eagles. In the first performance he was cast as Eino the side kick to Yakko and friend to our hero Eric. Preston Meyer is coming all the way from GERMANY to grace our stage with a performance as Krooke the dastardly villain on Labor Day weekend and then for closing weekend he will be performing as Yakko. Preston has ties to Shanghaied from over 18 years ago when as a young boy he would sit backstage in the wings watching the then original Krooke~ Greg Minor bring to life what has now become legend here in Astoria. He went on to play over the years, sailors, Mark Castle, Eino and Eric when he finally landed in the role of Krooke he create a memorable performance for several years before moving to Germany where he has resided for over 5 years now.
The ASOC is very return of these two players is a great joy for the Shanghaied Family alumni celebrations and we hope their return will bring back many golden memories for long time Shanghaied fans.

Daily Astorian: In One Ear

Virginia REALLY says yes!
In a case of two local actors shanghai-ing each others hearts, Dan Allen and Nikole Engel (who play sweethearts Eric Olsen and Virginia Sweet in Shanghaied in Astoria) have announced their engagement.
The pair met as castmates in Shanghaied two summers ago, when they were cast as the romantic leads. Allen continued in his role as the sweet but dumb Norwegian cannery worker the next summer, while Engel spent three months working at a secondary school in Uganda. This year, you can sigh along with the lovebirds at performances of the musical melodrama Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Finnish Meat Market, 279 W. Marine Drive.
Engel said their fellow Astor Street Opry Company cast and crew have all been really supportive. Theyre all looking out for us, she said. And do Eric and Virginia actually kiss behind that parasol? Sometimes, Engel divulged.
Allen is a graduate of Knappa High School and a senior at Western Oregon University. Engel graduated from Astoria High School and will attend WOU. They plan a December wedding in Astoria.
Can a stock car driver get shanghaied? You bet, if theyre racing against Chris Graf and Grafs Automotive Hobby Stock Car No. 77. Together with My Little Phone Book, Shanghaied in Astoria is sponsoring Grafs car in Grays Harbor Racing Association events through October.
You can see the Shanghaied car race at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 and 18 at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. Later in the season, Graf and his crew chief (and father), Nicholas Graf, will be tearing up the track at River City Speedway in St. Helens and South Sound Speedway in Tenino, Wash.

There is a cheerful frivolity in vaudeville which makes it appeal to more people of widely divergent interests than does any other form of entertainment. It represents the almost universal longing for laughter, for melody, for color, for action, for wonder-provoking things. It exacts no intellectual activity on the part of those who gather to enjoy it; in its essence it is an enemy to responsibility, to worries, to all the little ills of life. It is joyously, frankly absurd, from the broad, elemental nonsense of the fun makers to the marvelous acrobatic feats of performers who conceive immensely difficult things for the pleasure of doing them. Vaudeville brings home to us the fact that we are children of a larger growth, and this is one of the finest things about it. It supports the sour Schopenhauer theory-one of those misleading part truths-that life consists in trying to step aside to escape the immediate trouble that menaces us. ~ From In Vaudeville by Hartley Davis published 1905 in Everybodys Magazine
